STORY OF THE DAY: Shelby Wins on Torrey Pines’ Airfield Roads

On 7 October 1955, Carroll Shelby drove the number 20 Ferrari 375 MM to victory in the over-1.5-litre category at the Torrey Pines National meeting. The result added a notable American success to the record of Ferrari’s powerful front-engined sports racer.

Torrey Pines used roads around a former military installation near San Diego, creating a temporary course with rough surfaces and limited margins. Shelby’s control of the large Ferrari through the improvised layout proved decisive. The performance strengthened his emerging reputation among the leading figures in American sports-car racing.

The 375 MM was constructed around a tubular chassis and a front-mounted Lampredi V12 of approximately 4.5 litres. Its open bodywork and substantial power made it formidable on fast American circuits, although its weight and drum brakes demanded physical commitment and measured braking.

Shelby was a Texan who entered motor racing after wartime service and work in several businesses. He raced privately owned Ferraris before winning Le Mans with Aston Martin in 1959 and becoming an influential constructor. His Torrey Pines victory anticipated the combination of speed and technical judgment that later defined his career.
