STORY OF THE DAY: The Small Dino Cannot Escape Le Mans Attrition

Nino Vaccarella and Mario Casoni retired Ferrari Dino 206 S number 25 from the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans. The two-litre prototype offered a contrasting strategy to Ferrari’s four-litre P3s, but it also failed to finish during a race in which none of the marque’s principal prototypes reached the flag.

The Dino depended on efficiency, agility and lower fuel consumption rather than matching the leading Ford Mk IIs on raw speed. Its retirement removed Ferrari’s alternative route to a useful class and overall result, deepening the factory’s difficult weekend at the Circuit de la Sarthe.

The 206 S featured a two-litre V6 behind the cockpit, a lightweight tubular chassis and low sports-prototype bodywork. Developed from Ferrari’s smaller Dino racing line, it was at its best on technical circuits, while Le Mans demanded sustained maximum speed and uncompromising durability from its compact mechanical package.

Vaccarella was a Sicilian teacher and major Ferrari endurance driver, with victories at Le Mans and the Targa Florio. Casoni was an Italian sports-car specialist who raced a wide variety of Ferrari machinery. Their pairing brought extensive road-racing judgment to the smaller prototype experiment.
