STORY OF THE DAY: Parkes and Scarfiotti Complete Ferrari’s Daytona One-Two

On 5 February 1967, Mike Parkes and Ludovico Scarfiotti finished second in the 24 Hours of Daytona with the number 24 Ferrari 330 P3. They followed the Bandini–Amon entry home and helped Ferrari occupy every position on the podium.

Their contribution depended on preserving the car through darkness, traffic and prolonged running on the banking. Near the finish, Parkes and Scarfiotti joined the other leading Ferraris in a coordinated formation, turning the team’s dominance into a deliberate visual answer to Ford’s recent endurance success.

The 330 P3 used a mid-engined layout, a four-litre fuel-injected V12 and a structure combining tubes with stressed panels. Its closed aerodynamic body balanced low drag on the oval with the agility required in Daytona’s infield. The car belonged to a rapidly evolving line that led directly to the P4.

Parkes was a British engineer, tester and versatile works driver whose feedback contributed significantly to Ferrari development. Scarfiotti was an Italian Le Mans winner, Grand Prix victor and European hill-climb champion. Their technical understanding and measured speed made them an especially dependable endurance partnership.
