STORY OF THE DAY: The Evoluzione Points Beyond Group B

On 1 January 1987, the Ferrari 288 GTO Evoluzione was presented at Imola as the extreme development of Ferrari’s Group B concept. This was a presentation rather than a competitive appearance, and the prototype never acquired the championship career originally envisaged for its lineage.

The cancellation of Group B removed the car’s intended arena before a full racing programme could mature. Its importance therefore became developmental: the small series of experimental cars explored greater power, reduced weight, revised cooling and advanced aerodynamics, forming a technical bridge between the 288 GTO and the F40.

The Evoluzione retained a longitudinally mounted, twin-turbocharged 2.9-litre V8 in a light tubular structure. Aggressive composite bodywork, enlarged wings and deep cooling ducts distinguished it from the road-going GTO, while its output and power-to-weight ratio rose dramatically.

No designated race driver belongs to this presentation. Ferrari’s engineers and test personnel were responsible for evaluating a prototype whose purpose changed when its regulations disappeared. Their work remains significant because many of its solutions informed later Ferrari development even though the Evoluzione itself did not establish a conventional competition record.
