STORY OF THE DAY: Ferrari’s Number 21 Retires as Ford Takes Control

Jean Guichet and Lorenzo Bandini retired works Ferrari 330 P3 number 21 from the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans. The title’s “Louis Guichet” conflicts with established records identifying Jean Guichet. Their failure left Ferrari without a finishing P3 as Ford swept the podium.

The P3 represented Ferrari’s direct response to Ford’s escalating programme, but the race became a test of resources as well as speed. Number 21’s retirement reduced an already smaller Ferrari force and helped make the contest a decisive reversal after years of Maranello dominance.

Ferrari’s 330 P3 combined a fuel-injected four-litre V12 with a mid-engined tubular and stressed-panel chassis. Its curving body reduced frontal area and improved aerodynamic efficiency, while new Lucas injection distinguished it from the carburetted P2. Sophistication, however, did not guarantee 24-hour survival.

Frenchman Jean Guichet was a measured endurance specialist and Ferrari’s 1964 Le Mans winner. Italian Bandini was a works Formula One driver and 1963 Le Mans winner. Their partnership united two proven champions, making the result a mechanical defeat rather than a shortage of experience.
