STORY OF THE DAY: Stewart and Amon Secure Ferrari’s Championship

On 30 July 1967, Jackie Stewart and Chris Amon finished second at Brand Hatch in the number 6 Ferrari 330 P4. Their result in the BOAC 500 supplied decisive points for Ferrari’s World Sportscar Championship campaign during the final major appearance of the factory P4 programme.

The fast, undulating British circuit rewarded precision and confidence through blind crests and long corners. Stewart and Amon kept the Ferrari in contention throughout the six-hour race but finished behind the winning Chaparral. Second place nevertheless fulfilled Ferrari’s larger strategic objective for the season.

The 330 P4 used a four-litre V12 with three valves per cylinder, mounted behind the cockpit in a light structure combining tubes and stressed panels. Its carefully developed body provided high-speed stability, while centralized weight and responsive handling suited Brands Hatch’s frequent elevation changes.

Amon was a New Zealander and a leading Ferrari sports-car and Formula One driver, already victorious at Daytona that season. Stewart was a Scottish Grand Prix star known for smoothness and analytical precision. Their rare partnership united two of the period’s most naturally gifted drivers at a championship-deciding race.
