STORY OF THE DAY: Ferrari’s Boxer Becomes a Le Mans Racer

On 1 January 1978, the Ferrari 512 BB LM was presented at Fiorano as an endurance-racing development of the Berlinetta Boxer. This was a presentation and testing milestone rather than a race, so no finishing position was attached to the occasion.

The programme addressed the needs of private teams seeking a successor to the competition Daytona. Earlier racing Boxers had revealed shortcomings in aerodynamics and reliability, prompting a more comprehensive transformation. The LM would subsequently build its reputation through customer entries at Le Mans and in world championship events.

The 512 BB LM retained a five-litre, 180-degree V12 and tubular chassis but received fuel injection, substantial weight reduction and elongated aerodynamic bodywork. Its lower nose, wide stance and extended tail prioritized cooling, high-speed stability and reduced drag rather than resemblance to the production road car.

No driver is identified in the presentation title. The car’s initial character was established by Ferrari engineers, Fiorano test personnel and specialist competition partners, while private teams later developed its racing record. That partnership between Maranello and customer entrants defined the 512 BB LM’s endurance career.
