STORY OF THE DAY: The F40 Is Prepared for Competition

On 1 January 1988, the Ferrari F40 LM was presented at Fiorano as a competition development of the F40. Prepared by Michelotto for racing customers, it began as a development project rather than a factory championship entry, so the presentation carried no finishing result.

Transforming the road car required far more than removing interior equipment. Michelotto revised cooling, suspension and aerodynamics while reducing weight and preparing the structure for prolonged circuit loads. The result was a rare and uncompromising competition derivative whose racing career would be conducted primarily by private teams.

The F40 LM retained the production model’s mid-mounted 2.9-litre twin-turbo V8 and composite-intensive construction. Larger turbochargers, racing brakes, revised suspension, extensive weight reduction and more aggressive bodywork substantially increased its performance. Exact output and detail specification varied during development and between individual cars.

No driver is named in this presentation entry. Ferrari’s test programme and Michelotto’s engineering work created the model’s initial identity, while customer drivers later established its competition history. That division between Maranello origins and private operation characterized Ferrari’s limited GT-racing involvement during the late 1980s.
