STORY OF THE DAY: Fangio Masters the Nürburgring

Juan Manuel Fangio won the 1956 German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring in the number 1 Lancia-Ferrari D50. On the formidable Nordschleife, the reigning champion converted pole position into a commanding victory and strengthened his pursuit of a fourth World Drivers’ Championship.

Fangio controlled the race with exceptional precision, setting the fastest lap and finishing well ahead of Stirling Moss. The combination of his measured pace and Ferrari’s reliability proved decisive on a circuit where changing gradients, blind crests and more than 170 corners punished the smallest error.

The D50 had originated at Lancia before Ferrari acquired the design and developed it for 1956. Its compact 2.5-litre V8 was mounted at an angle within a tubular chassis, while Ferrari revised Vittorio Jano’s original concept, including the distinctive side-mounted fuel tanks, into a more conventional and dependable Grand Prix car.

Argentine Juan Manuel Fangio was already the defining driver of his generation when he joined Ferrari for 1956. A champion with Alfa Romeo and Mercedes-Benz, he brought unmatched experience and mechanical sympathy to the Scuderia; this Nürburgring victory was a central step toward the fourth of his five world titles.
