STORY OF THE DAY: Ferrari Reaches the Monza Podium

Mike Hawthorn, Phill Hill and Luigi Musso shared the number 12 Ferrari 412 MI to finish third in the 1958 500 Miglia di Monza. Better known as the Race of Two Worlds, the non-championship event matched European machinery against American USAC cars over three heats on Monza’s high-speed banked oval, where Jim Rathmann won all three contests.

Ferrari’s challenge depended on adapting drivers and machinery to sustained oval speeds unfamiliar in European Grand Prix racing. Musso underlined the car’s pace by taking pole position, while the three-driver arrangement helped the 412 MI survive the demanding format and secure the leading European result on aggregate.

The 412 MI was created specifically for Monza by installing a modified four-litre Ferrari V12 in a substantially adapted single-seater chassis. Its designation referred to the engine capacity and Monza-Indianapolis purpose, while strengthened components and streamlined bodywork addressed the exceptional speed and loading of the banking.

Hawthorn, Hill and Musso represented three contrasting pillars of Ferrari’s 1958 team: an English Grand Prix specialist, an American endurance expert and one of Italy’s leading drivers. Their combined third place is distinctive because it united their talents in an experimental event far removed from a conventional World Championship Grand Prix.
