STORY OF THE DAY: Alesi masters the rain to rescue a Spanish podium

Jean Alesi finished third for Ferrari in the 1992 Spanish Grand Prix at Barcelona, the fourth round of the Formula One World Championship. Nigel Mansell continued his dominant opening to the season with victory for Williams-Renault, ahead of Benetton’s Michael Schumacher. In an uncompetitive Ferrari, Alesi’s podium was an important result achieved amid persistent rain and rapidly changing grip.

From eighth on the grid, Alesi surged to third at the opening corner. Schumacher later passed him, and contact with Gerhard Berger sent the Ferrari spinning, but Alesi recovered as the rain intensified. After changing tyres, he fought back through the field, overtook Berger and regained a podium position when Ayrton Senna crashed in the closing laps.

The F92A was built around Ferrari’s naturally aspirated 3.5-litre V12 and featured an unusual double-floor aerodynamic concept intended to improve airflow beneath the car. In practice, the design proved difficult to develop and suffered from inconsistent handling and inadequate performance. Its shortcomings made Alesi’s third place in demanding wet conditions especially notable.

Jean Alesi was born in France to Sicilian parents and established his reputation with forceful, expressive performances for Tyrrell. He joined Ferrari in 1991 and quickly became admired for his commitment, particularly when conditions rewarded instinct and car control. Barcelona provided a clear example: despite contact and an imperfect car, his persistence delivered Ferrari’s first podium of the 1992 season.
