STORY OF THE DAY: Schumacher presses Frentzen to the finish at Imola

Michael Schumacher finished second in the 1997 San Marino Grand Prix at Imola, the fourth round of the Formula One World Championship. Heinz-Harald Frentzen earned his first Grand Prix victory for Williams, while Schumacher brought Ferrari number 5 home just over a second behind him. Eddie Irvine’s third place completed a double podium for Ferrari on Italian soil.

Schumacher qualified third and remained in contention as the race developed around strategy and reliability. Jacques Villeneuve’s retirement removed one Williams, but Frentzen retained control after the pit stops. Schumacher mounted a determined late pursuit, closing rapidly without finding a safe opportunity to pass on a circuit where track position remained decisive.

The F310B was a comprehensive evolution of Ferrari’s 1996 car, retaining a naturally aspirated three-litre V10 within a carbon-fibre composite monocoque. Its cleaner aerodynamic treatment and improved mechanical integration made it a more effective championship contender. Although still short of Williams’s ultimate performance at several circuits, it gave Schumacher a platform for a sustained title campaign.

Michael Schumacher had joined Ferrari after winning the 1994 and 1995 World Championships with Benetton. The German combined exceptional speed with an ability to shape a team’s technical direction. At Imola, his pressure on Frentzen and Ferrari’s two podium finishes showed that the Scuderia could challenge even when it did not possess the fastest car.
