STORY OF THE DAY: A Hard-Earned Point at Imola

Charles Leclerc finished eighth in the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Imola, driving the number 16 Ferrari SF1000. The World Championship returned to the circuit for the first time since 2006, on a revised calendar shaped by the COVID-19 pandemic. Lewis Hamilton won ahead of Valtteri Bottas and Daniel Ricciardo.

Leclerc started seventh and spent much of the race fighting in the lower points positions. A late safety car, caused by Max Verstappen’s tyre failure, compressed the field and created a difficult restart. Leclerc was unable to retain every position against faster cars but brought the uncompetitive Ferrari home in eighth.

The SF1000 was named in anticipation of Ferrari’s 1,000th World Championship Grand Prix during the 2020 season. It used a carbon-fibre composite chassis and Ferrari’s 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 hybrid power unit. Excess drag and a significant loss of power-unit performance made it one of the Scuderia’s most difficult modern designs.

Monégasque driver Leclerc progressed through the Ferrari Driver Academy and won both GP3 and Formula 2 before reaching Formula One. He joined Ferrari in 2019, winning at Spa and Monza during his first season with the team. His ability to salvage points at Imola reflected the resilience required throughout Ferrari’s troubled 2020 campaign.
