STORY OF THE DAY: Hawthorn Prevails in the Pedralbes Finale
Mike Hawthorn won the 1954 Spanish Grand Prix at Barcelona’s Pedralbes street circuit in the number 38 Ferrari 553 F1 Squalo. Starting third, he completed the 80-lap World Championship finale ahead of Luigi Musso’s Maserati and Juan Manuel Fangio’s Mercedes-Benz. Fangio had already secured the championship, but Hawthorn’s victory gave Ferrari an important success at the close of a difficult season.

The race changed repeatedly as leading contenders encountered trouble. Alberto Ascari put the new Lancia D50 on pole and led impressively before retiring with clutch failure, while several subsequent leaders also fell away. Hawthorn emerged from the attrition and maintained his pace as Fangio’s Mercedes developed problems, leaving Musso to take second and the Ferrari driver to claim a hard-earned victory.

Ferrari’s 553 carried the nickname Squalo, or shark, for its distinctive bodywork. It employed a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre inline four-cylinder Lampredi engine in keeping with the Formula One regulations introduced for 1954. Its chassis and handling proved difficult to perfect, but continued development allowed Hawthorn to extract a winning performance at Pedralbes.

Mike Hawthorn was an English driver whose speed and independent character made him one of Britain’s foremost competitors of the 1950s. He joined Ferrari’s Grand Prix team in 1953 and won at Reims during his first season with the marque. The Pedralbes triumph was his second World Championship victory and an important step in a Ferrari career that culminated in the 1958 drivers’ title.
