STORY OF THE DAY: Gendebien Scores on His Grand Prix Debut
Olivier Gendebien finished fifth in the 1956 Argentine Grand Prix at Buenos Aires, driving the number 38 Ferrari 555 F1 Supersqualo. The opening round of the World Championship was won by the shared Lancia-Ferrari D50 of Luigi Musso and Juan Manuel Fangio. Gendebien’s measured drive earned a championship point on his Grand Prix debut and placed a second type of Ferrari among the finishers.

The race was shaped by mechanical failures and sudden changes at the front. Fangio recovered in Musso’s car after trouble with his original D50, while Carlos Menditeguy retired from the lead and Stirling Moss encountered engine difficulties. Behind those reversals, Gendebien kept the older Supersqualo running to the finish, turning consistency into a points result amid the attrition.

The 555 Supersqualo evolved from Ferrari’s 553 and used a front-mounted, naturally aspirated 2.5-litre Lampredi inline four-cylinder engine. Revisions to the chassis and bodywork sought to correct the earlier car’s difficult handling, but by 1956 the design was being displaced by the more advanced Lancia-derived D50. Its appearance in Argentina reflected Ferrari’s transitional technical position at the beginning of the season.

Olivier Gendebien was a Belgian driver who came to Ferrari’s attention through rallying and became one of the outstanding endurance racers of his generation. Although his World Championship career was selective, he developed a distinguished bond with the Scuderia and later won Le Mans four times, three of them in Ferraris. Fifth place in Buenos Aires introduced his Grand Prix career with the same restraint and reliability that defined his sports-car achievements.
