STORY OF THE DAY: Hawthorn’s Second Place Strengthens His Title Bid

Mike Hawthorn finished second in the 1958 British Grand Prix at Silverstone, driving the number 2 Ferrari Dino 246 F1. Peter Collins won in the sister Ferrari, giving the Scuderia a commanding one-two result in a World Championship race and adding important points to Hawthorn’s successful title campaign.

Collins led decisively, while Hawthorn resisted the challenge from the leading Vanwalls and brought his Ferrari home behind his teammate. The outcome reflected both Ferrari’s pace on Silverstone’s fast layout and the cooperation between two close friends competing amid an increasingly tense championship season.

The Dino 246 F1 combined a front-engined tubular chassis with a 2.4-litre V6 developed from Vittorio Jano’s Dino engine family. Although rear-engined British cars were beginning to reshape Formula One, the powerful and robust Ferrari remained highly effective on fast circuits during 1958.

Englishman Mike Hawthorn joined Ferrari after establishing himself as one of Britain’s leading young drivers.
