STORY OF THE DAY: Giunti scores points on his Formula One debut

Ignazio Giunti finished fourth in the 1970 Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps, scoring World Championship points on his Formula One debut. Driving Ferrari number 28, he completed the race behind Pedro Rodríguez, Chris Amon and Jean-Pierre Beltoise. Rodríguez’s victory was the last achieved on the original high-speed Spa circuit before the Belgian Grand Prix temporarily left the venue.

Giunti approached the exceptionally fast road course with restraint and consistency while more experienced competitors encountered trouble. He did not challenge the leading duel between Rodríguez and Amon, but he avoided costly errors and brought the Ferrari home in a strong position. Fourth place immediately demonstrated that his sports-car experience could be transferred to Grand Prix machinery.

The Ferrari 312 B introduced a new three-litre flat-twelve engine designed under Mauro Forghieri. Compared with the preceding V12, the engine’s opposed-cylinder layout lowered the centre of gravity and contributed to a more compact, better-balanced car. The design restored Ferrari to regular contention during the 1970 season and became the foundation of its Formula One programme for several years.

Ignazio Giunti was an Italian driver who built his reputation in touring cars and sports cars before joining Ferrari in 1970. His speed in the marque’s prototypes earned him selected Formula One opportunities alongside Ferrari’s other emerging drivers. The accomplished debut at Spa promised a broader future, but his career ended tragically in a sports-car accident at Buenos Aires in January 1971.
