STORY OF THE DAY: Ickx finishes eighth in Ferrari’s troubled British campaign

Jackie Ickx finished eighth in the 1973 British Grand Prix at Silverstone with Ferrari number 3. The World Championship race required a restart after a major opening-lap accident at Woodcote eliminated several cars, although Ickx avoided the wreckage. Peter Revson won for McLaren, while Ferrari again finished outside the points during a deeply disappointing season.

Ickx brought the car through the restarted race but lacked the pace to challenge the leading group. Eighth place was representative of Ferrari’s difficulties rather than of the Belgian’s proven ability. Soon afterward the team withdrew from selected Grands Prix to concentrate on reorganising and developing a more competitive car.

The 312 B3-73 retained Ferrari’s three-litre flat-twelve engine but introduced a new chassis and revised aerodynamic arrangement. Its bulky bodywork and front-mounted cooling installation failed to produce the balance or efficiency required against contemporary British designs. Later development, accompanied by Mauro Forghieri’s return to technical leadership, transformed the basic concept into the far more effective 1974 car.

Jackie Ickx was a Belgian whose exceptional wet-weather skill and versatility brought success in Formula One, endurance racing and rally-raids. He won six World Championship Grands Prix for Ferrari and twice finished runner-up in the Drivers’ Championship. At Silverstone in 1973, his modest result illustrated how even a driver of his calibre could not compensate for the limitations of that season’s Ferrari.
