STORY OF THE DAY: Merzario narrowly misses the points in Austria

Arturo Merzario finished seventh in the 1973 Austrian Grand Prix at the Österreichring with Ferrari number 4. The World Championship race was won by Ronnie Peterson for Lotus, while Jackie Stewart’s second place secured his third Drivers’ Championship. Merzario finished one position outside the points during a season in which Ferrari struggled to match the leading teams.

Ferrari returned in Austria after missing the preceding German Grand Prix as it worked to improve the 312 B3. Merzario completed the race on the fast and demanding circuit, but the revised car still lacked the performance required for a championship point. Seventh nevertheless represented a reliable finish after the disruption surrounding the team’s mid-season technical reorganisation.

The 312 B3-73 used Ferrari’s three-litre flat-twelve engine but underwent conspicuous aerodynamic changes during the year. The Austrian configuration featured revised nose treatment and a prominent air intake above the cockpit, evidence of continuing work on cooling and engine breathing. These experiments helped inform the substantially redesigned and more competitive 312 B3 used in 1974.

Arturo Merzario was an Italian driver who entered Formula One with Ferrari in 1972 and scored a point on his World Championship debut. He combined Grand Prix duties with an extensive sports-car programme and became known for courage, versatility and direct technical feedback. His Austrian finish belongs to his only full Formula One season with Ferrari and to the difficult transition preceding the Scuderia’s revival.
