STORY OF THE DAY: Ferrari Tests the Shape of Its Future

On 6 September 1974, Clay Regazzoni tested a developmental Ferrari 312 B3 at Monza. This was a test rather than a race, conducted during a season in which Ferrari had returned to the front of the Formula One World Championship after several difficult years.

The session belonged to a broader programme of experimentation led by Mauro Forghieri. Ferrari used testing to examine chassis, suspension and aerodynamic ideas, not all of which appeared in competition. Such work helped establish the disciplined development process that underpinned the Scuderia’s subsequent success.

The 312 B3 retained Ferrari’s naturally aspirated flat-12 engine, whose low installation was a defining feature of the marque’s Formula One cars. Its evolving chassis provided valuable knowledge for the 312 T, introduced in 1975 with a transverse gearbox and a more effective overall layout.

Swiss-born Regazzoni had already raced for Ferrari from 1970 to 1972 before returning in 1974. Fast, resilient and experienced, he played an important role in rebuilding the team alongside Niki Lauda. His testing work was especially valuable because it connected Ferrari’s troubled early-1970s designs with the championship-winning machinery that followed.
