STORY OF THE DAY: Irvine limits the damage in a difficult Belgian round

Eddie Irvine finished fourth in the 1999 Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps, round twelve of the Formula One World Championship. David Coulthard led Mika Häkkinen home in a McLaren one-two, while Heinz-Harald Frentzen took third for Jordan. Irvine’s Ferrari number 4 lacked the pace to challenge the leaders, but his points kept him firmly involved in the title contest.

The visual character of the weekend was shaped by Belgium’s restrictions on tobacco advertising. Teams removed or altered their usual cigarette branding rather than risk penalties, and Ferrari ran with substitute markings. On the track, Coulthard seized the lead from Häkkinen at the first corner and remained in command, leaving Irvine to collect the best result available behind the two McLarens and Frentzen.

The F399 used a carbon-fibre composite monocoque, a naturally aspirated three-litre Ferrari V10 and a seven-speed semi-automatic gearbox. It was an evolution of the F300 rather than a radical departure, with detailed improvements intended to reduce weight and increase reliability. Its dependable scoring proved crucial across the full season.

Eddie Irvine was a Northern Irish driver who entered Formula One with Jordan in 1993 and joined Ferrari in 1996. Usually Michael Schumacher’s teammate, he became Ferrari’s principal title contender after Schumacher broke his leg at Silverstone. Fourth at Spa was not a headline result, but the points contributed to a campaign in which Irvine eventually finished only two points short of the World Championship.
