STORY OF THE DAY: Schumacher Restores the Suzuka Order

Michael Schumacher won the 2004 Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka from pole position in the number 1 Ferrari F2004. Already confirmed as World Champion for a seventh time, he controlled the seventeenth round of the season ahead of his brother Ralf Schumacher and Jenson Button, recording his thirteenth and final victory of a remarkable campaign.

A typhoon forced Saturday’s running to be cancelled, so qualifying and the race were held on the same day. Schumacher adapted perfectly to the compressed schedule, established an immediate advantage and remained beyond serious challenge. The result was the fifth and final occasion on which the Schumacher brothers finished a Grand Prix first and second.

Ferrari’s F2004 employed a carbon-fibre composite chassis and the three-litre Tipo 053 naturally aspirated V10. Its efficient aerodynamics, compact packaging and exceptional mechanical consistency made it effective across widely differing circuits, helping Ferrari secure both 2004 World Championships with several rounds remaining.

Born in Hürth, West Germany, Schumacher built his reputation with Benetton before joining Ferrari in 1996. He became the central figure in the team’s return to sustained championship success, winning five consecutive drivers’ titles for Ferrari from 2000 through 2004. Suzuka delivered the last victory of his most dominant season.
