STORY OF THE DAY: A Difficult Debut in the Desert

Michael Schumacher retired from the 2005 Bahrain Grand Prix at Sakhir in the number 1 Ferrari F2005. Ferrari introduced the new car earlier than originally intended after a difficult start to the season, but Schumacher’s race ended after 12 laps. Fernando Alonso won the World Championship round for Renault ahead of Jarno Trulli and Kimi Räikkönen.

Schumacher qualified on the front row and initially followed Alonso, offering Ferrari hope of an immediate revival. A hydraulic problem forced him into the pits and ended a sequence of 58 Grands Prix without a mechanical retirement. Ferrari competed with black nose sections as a mark of respect following the death of Pope John Paul II.

The F2005 used a carbon-fibre composite monocoque and Ferrari’s three-litre Tipo 055 V10. Designed for the aerodynamic and tyre regulations introduced that season, it featured revised bodywork and suspension compared with the interim F2004M. Its Bahrain debut showed useful speed, although reliability and tyre performance constrained Ferrari throughout 2005.

Born in West Germany, Schumacher won two championships with Benetton before joining Ferrari in 1996. He helped transform the team into Formula One’s dominant force and secured five consecutive drivers’ championships in red from 2000 to 2004. His early Bahrain retirement sharply contrasted with the extraordinary reliability of those successful years.
