STORY OF THE DAY: Leclerc Resists Mercedes at Monza

Charles Leclerc won the 2019 Italian Grand Prix at Monza in the number 16 Ferrari SF-90. Starting from pole, he defeated both Mercedes drivers to claim a second consecutive victory and Ferrari’s first home Grand Prix success since Fernando Alonso in 2010.

Lewis Hamilton pressured Leclerc relentlessly after the pit stops, repeatedly entering DRS range and attempting to force an opening. Leclerc defended forcefully and received a warning after squeezing Hamilton beyond the track. When Hamilton locked a tyre at the first chicane, Valtteri Bottas inherited the pursuit, but Leclerc withstood the renewed challenge to trigger an immense celebration among the tifosi.

The SF90 was powered by Ferrari’s 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 hybrid unit and displayed exceptional straight-line performance, a decisive strength at Monza. Its low-drag aerodynamic configuration suited the circuit’s long full-throttle sections, although the car was generally less effective through slower corners than its principal rivals.

Born in Monaco, Leclerc won the GP3 and Formula 2 championships in successive seasons after progressing through the Ferrari Driver Academy. He entered Formula One with Sauber in 2018 and joined Ferrari the following year. At 21, his composed defence at Monza confirmed his status as a central figure in the Scuderia’s future.
