STORY OF THE DAY: Bandini and Amon Lead Ferrari’s Daytona Sweep

On 5 February 1967, Lorenzo Bandini and Chris Amon won the 24 Hours of Daytona in the number 23 Ferrari 330 P3/P4. They led a Ferrari sweep of the first three positions, delivering an emphatic response to Ford’s victory at Le Mans the previous year.

The lasting image was Ferrari’s coordinated formation finish. After a disciplined day-and-night performance, Bandini and Amon led the other two Ferraris across the line together. The carefully staged conclusion turned a major endurance victory into one of the most recognizable demonstrations of team strength in racing history.

The winning car began as a P3 and was updated toward P4 specification. It combined a mid-engined chassis with a four-litre Ferrari V12, revised bodywork and substantial mechanical development. Strong aerodynamics and centralized mass suited both Daytona’s steep banking and its slower infield section.

Bandini was an Italian Ferrari Grand Prix winner and a Le Mans victor. Amon, from New Zealand, had joined the works team after establishing a reputation for exceptional natural speed. Their Daytona success became one of the most important shared achievements of two drivers central to Ferrari’s 1967 campaign.
