Mercedes had introduced the concept since 1954 for some of the races of the F1 calendar with great results. Fangio had won both Championship with Mercedes in 1954 and 1955. In 1956, before the French GP in Reims, Ferrari tested some different streamline chassis with drivers Alfonso de Portago and Eugenio Castelotti. The result did not satisfied the Scuderia. Ferrari has registered 4 cars to run the GP of France: Fangio, Collins, Castellotti y De Portago. The last two were scheduled to race the new streamline models, but Ferrari decided not to run them and both driver, together with Fangio and Collins raced with the standard D50. It was a good decision Collins won, followed by Castellotti, Fangio was 4th and De Portago 6th with the number 16.
