The 1978 United States Grand Prix West was a Formula One motor race held on April 2, 1978, at Long Beach, California.
Carlos Reutemann with this Ferrari 312 T3, took over at the halfway mark from Ferrari teammate Gilles Villeneuve, when the Canadian crashed out of the lead, and won by eleven seconds. It was the second American victory for the Argentine, who also won for Brabham at Watkins Glen in 1974. American Mario Andretti finished second to maintain a share of the Championship lead with Reutemann.
Carlos Alberto Reutemann born in Santa Fe, Argentina in 1942 was a Formula 1 driver from 1972 to 1982, competing for the Brabham, Ferrari, Lotus and Williams teams. He obtained 12 victories, 45 podiums and six pole positions in 144 scoring races, in addition to two wins and one pole in non-championship races. The driver finished 3rd in the 1975, 1978 and 1980 championships. In 1981, having overtaken his teammate and first Williams driver, Alan Jones, he finished second in the Drivers' Championship with a difference of just one point from the champion. Nelson Piquet.
On the other hand, he finished third in the 1980 and 1985 editions of the Rally of Argentina.
In 1991, parallel to his activities in the private sector as an agricultural producer, Reutemann was governor of the province of Santa Fe. Later, he served as a national senator from 2003 until his death.
